WE'VE LEARNED THE IDENTITY OF THE COLUMBUS POLICE DEPARTMENT OFFICER SHOT WHILE SERVING AN ARREST WARRANT THIS PAST WEEKEND


WE'VE LEARNED THE IDENTITY OF THE COLUMBUS POLICE DEPARTMENT OFFICER SHOT WHILE SERVING AN ARREST WARRANT THIS PAST WEEKEND. POLICE TELL US HE IS SWAT OFFICER STEVEN M. SMITH AND HE REMAINS IN CRTICAL CONDITION AT THIS HOUR.   OFFICER SMITH IS A 26-YEAR VETERAN WHO POLICE SAY WAS DRESSED HEAD TO TOE IN TACTICAL GEAR WHEN HE WAS SHOT EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING BY A MAN WANTED FOR SETTING HIS EX-GIRFLRIEND'S HOME ON FIRE. WE KNOW SWAT WAS TRYING TO ARREST LINCOLN RUTLEDGE ON A CHARGE OF AGGRAVATED ARSON AFTER LEARNING RUTLEDGE HAD BEEN BEHAVING ERRATICALLY AND HAD ACCESS TO WEAPONS. POLICE SAY RUTLEDGE REFUSED TO COME OUT AND THEN AS OFFICERS MOVED IN CLOSER, SHIELDED BY AN ARMORED CAR, POLICE SAY RUTLEDGE STARTED SHOOTING. THE STANDOFF CONTINUED MORE THAN 7 HOURS AFTER THE OFFICER WAS SHOT...EVEN AFTER THE SUSPECT'S APARTMENT CAUGHT FIRE...BEFORE POLICE SAY RUTLEDGE ULTIMATELY SURRENDERED. THE SUSPECT IS FACING A NEW CHARGE OF FELONIOUS ASSAULT.
