ODNR Offers Series of Hikes to Celebrate 75th Anniversary
Geology and Natural History of Original ODNR Lands will be Spotlighted.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), the ODNR Division of Geological Survey will lead a series of hikes at four of the agency’s original lands when it was formed in 1949. Throughout 2024, the Legacy Geology Hike Series will provide hikers with opportunities to join ODNR geologists and naturalists and explore Ohio State Parks that feature some of Ohio’s most fascinating geologic features, flora, and fauna.

The Legacy Geology Hike Series is designed to cover a wide range of Ohio’s geologic history, from the Ordovician Period through the most-recent Ice Age, a span of about 450 million years. From world-renowned fossil beds to striking rock formations, to the complex landforms left behind by glaciers, the geology of Ohio offers something interesting for everyone.

“We're excited to offer these hikes that were specially chosen to showcase some of Ohio's incredible geological heritage,” said Mark Jones, Division Chief and State Geologist of Ohio. “Participants will not only see beautiful natural landscapes, but they'll also learn about the geological processes that have shaped Ohio over millions of years.”
