DARKE COUNTY, Ohio—A fire destroyed the storage facility for a paint supply business in the Darke County village of Osgood Wednesday evening. A passerby reported the fire at OPPAC on North Street in the center of the community just after 6 pm.
The first arriving crews found that the building was fully engulfed and immediately called for a ladder truck, multiple tanker trucks, and personnel from departments in neighboring Auglaize, Mercer, and Shelby Counties. The village does not have any fire hydrants.
Firefighters got the fire under control in about two hours, and an excavator was brought in to knock down walls so that crews could gain access and extinguish smoldering materials inside.
Fire officials said nobody was inside at the time of the fire, and there were no reported injuries. A severe thunderstorm with heavy winds and lightning was a concern shortly after crews arrived, but it did not cause any issues.
The building was destroyed, but a dollar loss estimate and the cause have not been determined. The Ohio Fire Marshal's Office will be investigating.
Nearby Osgood businesses, Do Good Restaurant and Ministry and Winner's Meats, provided food and refreshments to the crews on the scene.
