Ohio Freedom Schools mobilize youth to speak out for public education

More than 250 students from across Ohio are gathering at the Statehouse today for a National Day of Social Action.
It is a youth-led effort to demand stronger, more equitable public education.
Jake Streeter, executive director of Cleveland Freedom Schools of Ohio, said his young scholars are encouraged to speak up about issues affecting their lives and education funding is at the top of the list. He stressed the goal is not just to be heard, it is to inspire others to speak up and take action.
"They will present their arguments and their perspectives, as well as their solutions, which will also be broadcasted live," Streeter explained. "Not just so their voices can be heard, but so that other youth can be inspired to make sure that their voices are heard on this topic as well as other topics that are to come."
Organized by the Children’s Defense Fund, he said the Freedom Schools program blends reading, cultural identity and civic leadership. This year's theme for the National Day of Social Action is, "Public education is a public good."
The group pointed out 13 states do not require any type of civic education. In contrast, Streeter noted the Ohio students are learning to see themselves as active participants in democracy, a lesson extending beyond a single day at the Capitol.
"We teach them that they can make a difference in their country," Streeter stressed. "They can make a difference in the world, their community."
The Freedom Schools program was launched in 1995 by the Children’s Defense Fund, rooted in the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer. Streeter added he hopes the experience shows youth and adults alike long-term change depends on local voices.
