AUGLAIZE COUNTY — Officials from all schools in Auglaize County are encouraging residents to examine how changes to property taxes could affect local services and other taxes.
Property taxes fund key community services including public education, police, fire, EMS, libraries, parks, and social services. They also support local government operations and infrastructure maintenance.
In a statement, Aaron Rex, Wapakoneta School Superintendent, noted that while many Ohioans are calling for property tax relief, any reduction in property taxes could have broader financial consequences. “Without a plan for the future, a loss in property taxes could lead to higher income taxes, sales taxes, and other fees,” Rex said.
Currently, Ohio’s income tax is 2.75%. For someone earning $100,000 annually, that amounts to $2,750 in state income taxes. If the rate were to rise to 5%, that same person would pay $5,000.
Sales taxes could also increase. Auglaize County’s current combined sales tax is 7.25%. For example, a $20,000 vehicle purchase currently incurs $1,450 in state and county taxes. If the sales tax were raised to 8.75%, taxes on the same purchase would increase to $1,750. Additional costs could appear in registration fees, grocery prices, and everyday purchases.
Rex urged residents to consider the full impact of property tax reductions, noting that local services rely heavily on these revenues.
“As discussions occur across the state, it’s important for everyone to evaluate what they pay in property taxes and what additional costs they might face through other taxes and fees,” Rex said.
