Mercer County veterans officer says support for those who served is a year-round commitment
Mercer County Veterans Services Officer Eric Pugh says while Veterans Day has passed, honoring those who served is something that should continue every day of the year.
Pugh says his office helps local veterans and their families navigate disability claims, VA health care enrollment, and survivor benefits. His team also coordinates with local funeral homes and hospitals to ensure families receive all eligible services and honors when a veteran passes away.
He adds that many benefits have expanded under new federal laws such as the PACT Act, which allows some veterans and surviving spouses to qualify for benefits that may not have been available in the past.
In addition to claims and counseling, the Mercer County Veterans Services Office provides transportation for medical appointments, working with the Council on Aging to help veterans who may have mobility issues.
Pugh also encourages younger veterans—and those just returning from deployment—to contact his office to learn about available benefits, including education programs under the Forever GI Bill and job placement opportunities through “Helmets to Hard Hats.”
He says the goal is to make sure every veteran and family member in Mercer County receives the support and recognition they’ve earned.
