Fort Recovery School Board Takes On Absenteeism and Reviews Proposed Cell Phone Ban

The Fort Recovery Local Schools Board of Education held its monthly meeting on November 17th, discussing key operational and instructional updates, including a significant review of a proposed district-wide cell phone ban.

Superintendent Tony Stahl informed the board that the discussion surrounding a potential cell phone ban is a direct result of new state legislation set to go into effect in January 2026. The board received an initial overview of the proposed policy, which aims to address concerns over distraction and student well-being ahead of the state mandate. Further details and planning are expected in future meetings as the district prepares for the implementation deadline.

In addition to policy matters, High School Principal Ryan Steinbrunner provided a report on ongoing efforts to address and improve student absenteeism rates. Improving attendance remains a priority, and the administration is focused on implementing strategies to ensure students are present and engaged in their learning environment.

The meeting also highlighted several successful initiatives and student achievements. Building principals reported on the district's productive partnership with the County Educational Service Center, focusing on data review sessions and instructional round feedback designed to enhance teaching staff effectiveness. Updates were also provided on upcoming student programs, including the eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C., the identification of Carson scholarship nominees, and the induction of new National Honor Society members for the school year.

In administrative actions, the board approved the monthly financial reports, formally accepted several donations, established the compensation for board members for the coming year, and approved personnel moves affecting classified staff and spring coaches.

The next regularly scheduled Fort Recovery Board meeting is set for Monday, December 15th at 6:30 p.m. in the high school community room.
