To view the November meeting of the Celina Board of Education:
The Celina Board of Education covered a wide range of business during its November 25 meeting, highlighted by student presentations about a recent New York City trip, updates on the district’s construction plans, and public comments on building operations and student discipline procedures.
Several students from the Spirit Squad and Lab Rats shared emotional reflections from their weeklong educational trip to New York City. They spoke about volunteering at a food pantry, visiting historic sites such as the 9/11 Museum, seeing a Broadway show, and experiencing city life for the first time. Advisors said the experience helped students build confidence, connect with peers they might not normally interact with, and better understand different ways of life.
Architects and project managers also delivered a detailed update on the district’s ongoing construction and long-term facility planning. The presentation included cost estimates for a future athletic complex, potential relocation of the varsity football and soccer fields, upgrades to the existing TriStar wing of the former high school, and infrastructure needs tied to the new 7–12 building. The district’s remaining locally funded initiative and locally funded other budgets total just over $8.5 million. Proposed long-term projects exceed that amount, creating a need for prioritization and possible future fundraising.
During public participation, one resident asked about exterior lighting usage at the new 7–12 building and whether timers could help reduce daytime illumination. Another parent raised concerns about disciplinary procedures, alleging district policy was not followed in a recent student suspension. The parent asked the board to ensure due process is applied consistently.
The treasurer reported strong community support, noting numerous donations for academics, athletics, field trips, and the recent New York student experience. The board went on to approve routine financial items, personnel actions, contract changes, and Head Start reallocations before entering executive session.
The board is expected to vote on several policy updates at its next meeting, which administrators plan to move from December 15 to December 8.
