Rockford council shares holiday updates, approves bills, honors longtime employee

The Rockford Village Council covered a full agenda during its Tuesday night meeting, including holiday events, financial actions, and community recognitions.

Village Clerk and Treasurer Lisa Kuhn announced that Christmas lights at Shane’s Park will be on nightly through December and will remain lit until 10 p.m. Residents are invited to drive through the park to enjoy the display. Kuhn also reminded residents that village dog tags are on sale at the village office through January 30, 2026, at a cost of $22, payable by cash or check to the Mercer County Treasurer.

The village office will be closed for the Christmas holiday on Thursday and Friday, December 25 and 26, and will also be closed on Thursday, January 1, 2026, for New Year’s Day.

Kuhn highlighted “Together on Christmas,” a free Christmas Day dinner being held at the Rockford Community Building from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meal is open to everyone and celebrates the birth of Christ. Volunteers are also needed in January to help take down the Christmas lights at Shane’s Park. Those interested are asked to contact the village office.

Council approved payment of bills totaling $433,811.56. Kuhn noted that $110,000 of that amount was for loan payments, while $224,000 represented the final payment for subdivision phase two using loan proceeds. Additional purchase orders were also approved.

Council heard announcements from the Shane’s Crossing Historical Society about upcoming projects tied to America’s 250th anniversary. A “Plant a Tree With Us” program will allow residents to sponsor a tree for $140, with planting scheduled for fall 2026. A picnic table sponsorship program is also available at a cost of $150, with tables to be placed at Shane’s Park.

The council and mayor recognized Mike Bruns for 44 years of service to the Rockford community. Mayor Seawright issued a proclamation, and the chamber of commerce presented Bruns with a special recognition as he enters retirement.

Steve Muller with the Mercer County Imagination Library also spoke to council, promoting the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program. Children from newborn through age 5 are eligible to receive a free book each month. Families can sign up at the Rockford Carnegie Library or online.

The mayor and council closed the meeting by wishing residents a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
