Celina Mayor Jeff Hazel thanked city street crews for their response during last week’s snowy stretch and told WCSM’s Spectrum that keeping routes open for emergency vehicles is the first priority during winter storms.
Hazel joined host Kevin Sandler following Celina’s State of the City Address and said crews often start work in the early morning hours so streets are cleared before traffic ramps up. He also noted a recent burst of heavy snow hit during the morning commute, creating added challenges with vehicles already parked downtown.
Looking ahead, Hazel highlighted several city projects and seasonal plans.
He said the Mill Street reconstruction has been a major upgrade, with additional work expected in the spring to finish areas behind the sidewalk. He also said Sugar Street is on the city’s radar next, but will require additional time to address utilities before new surface work is done.
Hazel also pointed to the completion of a new Public Works facility, describing it as a 17,000 square foot building designed to house equipment and improve operations. He said the city’s former Public Works building on Portland Street will be sold to Celina City Schools for a bus garage.
In parks, Hazel said Westview Park will have a new restroom open this spring, along with a new shelter house created from the existing roofed structure. He added that a new playground is planned at Westview Park, funded by the Bryson Trust.
For 2026 street work, Hazel said the city is preparing to resurface Havemann Road and Grand Lake Road, describing them as heavily traveled corridors where timing and traffic flow will be key.
Hazel also discussed upcoming community events, including the summer concert series, use of the amphitheater and Red Tent, and the return of the Governor’s Cup and the Celina Lake Festival. He said organizers are also planning an expanded regatta this year.
During the interview, Hazel offered reminders about consumer awareness and scams, including natural gas aggregation and third party supplier pitches. He advised residents to avoid variable rate contracts, watch for termination fees, and verify who they are speaking with before sharing personal information. He also said Celina issues solicitor permits that require background checks, while noting some door to door activity is protected under constitutional rights.
