Mercer County EMA Director Chad Wilrath says the danger does not always end when a storm moves out of the area.
Speaking with WCSM on Spectrum, Wilrath said people need to stay alert after severe weather for hazards that can still cause injuries or create new emergencies. He noted that downed power lines, sharp debris, and dark conditions after overnight storms can all pose risks in the hours immediately following a weather event.
Wilrath also urged residents to check on their neighbors and use extra caution if generators are being used after a power outage. He said generators should never be operated in places where fumes could get back into a home or other structure and lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
