March 31st Severe storms possible today across the region

The National Weather Service says severe storms are likely this afternoon and evening across northern Indiana and surrounding areas, including the local region. The agency says the entire forecast area is now under a Slight Risk, or level 2 out of 5, for severe weather.

Forecasters say the main threats will be damaging wind gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour and hail around 1 inch in diameter. While the tornado threat is considered low, the Weather Service says it is not zero, and an isolated tornado or two is possible. If a tornado does form, it could be strong.

A few storms could begin developing as early as 2 p.m., but the better chance for scattered strong to severe storms is expected between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Storms are expected to become more widespread after 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service is urging people to stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Safety reminders in the briefing include setting up weather alerts on your phone, moving into a sturdy building when warnings are issued, staying away from windows once indoors, and getting into a vehicle if no building is nearby.

This was the last scheduled briefing from the National Weather Service early this morning unless significant changes become necessary.
