Lake Improvement Association highlights projects, tourism push and upcoming events at April meeting

CELINA — The Lake Improvement Association (LIA) shared updates on new projects, water quality efforts and a major summer event during its April meeting, with a focus on continued improvements around Grand Lake.

One of the most anticipated projects remains the planned Abilities Playground, set for installation on the east bank near the first shelter house. Organizers said fundraising is ongoing, but progress is being made.

Donations for the inclusive playground are tax-deductible through the St. Marys Community Foundation, and officials hope to provide a construction timeline at the next meeting.

Community members were also encouraged to take part in Lake Cleanup Day on April 25 from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers can pick up supplies at Windy Point and the first shelter house on the east bank, as well as locations on the west bank.

LIA officials reported their annual membership drive wrapped up successfully, with membership cards now arriving by mail. Final numbers are expected at the next meeting.

Promoting Grand Lake statewide

The association also announced it will purchase an advertisement in the May 2026 issue of Ohio Magazine as part of a broader effort to promote the Grand Lake region.

The ad, developed in partnership with the Grand Lake Region Visitors Center, will highlight the lake as a travel destination and promote the LIA’s free Grand Lake app.

Organizers said the campaign could reach more than 400,000 people through print, digital and social platforms.

“The goal is to bring people here, keep them here longer and support our local businesses,” one speaker said.

Water quality and infrastructure updates

Updates from lake officials included several ongoing water quality and infrastructure projects:

• A new lift station at Beaver Creek is expected to double water pumping capacity, improving nutrient removal efforts.
• Pumps at Beaver Creek, Prairie Creek and Coldwater Creek were activated March 30 to capture sediment early in the season.
• Expansion work at Prairie Creek will allow more sediment to settle before entering the lake.
• A new wetland project near Montezuma is progressing, with grant funding applications submitted.

Additionally, tree distribution through the Soil and Water Conservation District will provide trees to local third graders ahead of Earth Day.

State park report: rising lake levels, improvements underway

Grand Lake St. Marys State Park Manager Dave Faler reported improving water levels following recent rainfall, a welcome change after last year’s drought conditions.

He also noted:

• Campgrounds and restrooms are opening for the season, though early occupancy is slightly down.
• Dock fees are due May 1.
• Multiple capital improvement projects are underway, including restroom upgrades and shoreline work.
• Dredging operations continue, along with debris removal—more than 150 logs have already been cleared from the lake.

Boaters were reminded to check safety equipment and be cautious of cold water temperatures.

Governor’s Cup Regatta returns in June

The meeting also featured a presentation from organizers of the Governor’s Cup Regatta, scheduled for June 20–21.

The high-speed hydroplane racing event, returning after a hiatus, has been selected to host a major regional championship. Organizers expect around 60 boats from across the country.

Drivers and organizers praised Grand Lake as a premier race venue, citing strong community support and recent improvements around the lake.

The LIA has contributed $5,000 to help sponsor the event, which is free to attend and expected to draw significant crowds.

Looking ahead

LIA leaders closed the meeting by encouraging residents to share ideas for future lake improvement projects and to stay involved in ongoing efforts.

The next meeting is expected to include updates on the playground project timeline and additional membership totals.
