64 Calves Stolen Overnight from Farm Facility in Coldwater

Authorities are investigating the overnight theft of dozens of calves from a farm facility in rural Coldwater.

According to a social media post from those involved, 64 freshly weaned, 13-week-old calves were taken sometime between 10 p.m. May 2 and 6 a.m. May 3. The animals were housed in a converted turkey barn being used as a calf starter facility near the southeast corner of State Route 219 and Coldwater Creek Road.

The calves were reportedly being raised by Selhorst Farms on behalf of Gaerke Brother Farms at the time of the theft. Many of the animals are described as having docked tails, a detail that could help identify them.

Local law enforcement responded to the scene and has opened an investigation. Officials have not yet released suspect information.

Farmers and livestock sale barns in the region are being urged to remain alert for any calves matching the description. Those with information are encouraged to contact authorities.

The incident serves as a reminder for area producers to review and strengthen security measures around livestock facilities.

Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity during the overnight hours is asked to come forward as the investigation continues.
