A Celina woman plans to address the Celina Board of Education Monday afternoon regarding homeschool students' access to the district's band program.

Ashley Giesige says the district has decided that homeschool students will no longer be allowed to participate in band unless they began participating before January 2026.

In a public Facebook post, Giesige said she plans to speak at Monday's school board meeting and hopes to explain why she believes continuing to allow homeschool students to enroll in band would be beneficial to the district.

Giesige said the superintendent has the authority under Ohio law to grant or deny access to certain co curricular classes.

Ohio law provides home educated students access to certain extracurricular activities at the public school they otherwise would attend. However, state law distinguishes extracurricular activities from graded courses and other co curricular classes.

Giesige is encouraging members of the community interested in the issue to attend or watch the meeting and contact the superintendent or school board members with their opinions.

The Celina Board of Education is scheduled to meet Monday, August 24, at 4 p.m. at Celina High School.
