Celina City Schools is reviewing its policies and administrative guidelines following public discussion Monday over homeschool students participating in the district's band program.

Superintendent Brooke Gessler said members of the public addressed the Celina Board of Education regarding homeschool students who are partially enrolled in the district in order to participate in band.

Gessler said the district's current practice does not fully align with the language contained in its existing policies and administrative guidelines.

The district is now seeking legal guidance on how those policies can be adjusted to comply with Ohio law while also reflecting what district officials believe is best for students.

Gessler said the district recognizes the importance of the opportunity for participating students and families while also having a responsibility to make sure its policies and practices are legally sound.

While that review continues, homeschool students who are currently participating in the band program under the existing arrangement will be allowed to continue.

Gessler said the district's goal is to develop a clear, consistent and legally appropriate solution moving forward.

The issue was raised during Monday's Board of Education meeting after members of the public asked the district to continue allowing homeschool students to participate in band.
