Mercer County EMA Reminds Residents to Take Precautions During Hot Weather
With another stretch of hot weather settling into the area, the Mercer County Emergency Management Agency is reminding residents to take steps to protect themselves from heat related illnesses.
Mercer County Emergency Management Specialist Cassidy Freeman says staying hydrated is one of the most important precautions, particularly for anyone spending extended periods of time outdoors.
Freeman recommends drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcoholic beverages and replacing electrolytes during outdoor activities. She also reminds residents that sunscreen remains important because ultraviolet rays can still cause skin damage during hot weather.
People who are especially sensitive to the heat should consider spending time in an air conditioned location. Freeman noted that public places such as libraries can provide a cooler environment for those who may not have adequate air conditioning at home.
Anyone who must work or spend time outside should wear lightweight clothing and take regular breaks to avoid becoming overheated.
