Portland Man Arrested on Preliminary Murder Charge Following Shooting Death of 14-Year-Old

A Portland, Indiana, man has been arrested on preliminary charges, including murder, following a shooting that claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy.

According to the Portland Police Department, officers responded to a residence on Meadow Lane after receiving a report of a man outside the home armed with a handgun. Police say the man had discharged the firearm before returning inside the residence.

When officers arrived, they made contact with the man, identified as Michael A. Grody, and ordered him to exit the residence. During the encounter, officers deployed a Taser before taking Grody into custody.

While clearing the residence, officers discovered a 14-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound. First responders immediately began lifesaving efforts, but the juvenile later died from his injuries.

Grody was transported to the Jay County Security Center, where he was booked on multiple preliminary charges, including murder.

The Jay County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene. Indiana State Police and the Jay County Prosecutor's Office are also assisting with the ongoing investigation.
