A 14-year-old boy has died following a shooting in Portland, Indiana, and a man has been taken into custody on multiple preliminary charges, including murder.

According to Portland Police, officers responded to a residence on Meadow Lane after receiving a report of an armed man outside the home who had allegedly fired a handgun before returning inside.

When officers arrived, they made contact with a man identified as Michael A. Grody and ordered him to exit the residence.

Police say officers deployed a less-lethal Taser during the encounter before taking Grody into custody.

While clearing the residence, officers discovered a 14-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound.

First responders immediately began life-saving measures, but the juvenile died from his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Grody was transported to the Jay County Security Center and booked on multiple preliminary charges, including murder.

The Jay County Sheriff’s Office assisted Portland Police at the scene. Indiana State Police and the Jay County Prosecutor’s Office are also assisting with the investigation.

Authorities say the investigation remains active and ongoing, with additional information expected to be released when appropriate.

All charges against Grody are preliminary. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
