Auglaize County Junior Fair Queen Logan Henschen recently joined WCSM Radio during National 4-H Week to discuss her experience in the program and the opportunities it provides young people.

Henschen, a St. Marys graduate and freshman at The Ohio State University at Lima, said she grew up around 4-H through her family. She raised goats throughout her time in the program while also completing projects involving conservation, science, art and sewing.

Henschen said raising animals taught her that hard work pays off, while her service on the Auglaize County Junior Fair Board helped her strengthen her communication and leadership skills.

One of her most significant accomplishments was organizing the inaugural “Shine in the Show Ring” at the Auglaize County Fair. The event gave individuals with disabilities an opportunity to enter the show ring and experience an important part of 4-H.

The program carried personal meaning for Henschen because her older sister has Down syndrome. She said the idea was inspired by similar programs at other fairs and received strong support from the Auglaize County fair community.

Henschen also emphasized that young people do not need to live on a farm or show livestock to participate in 4-H. Available projects include cooking, sewing, photography, science, mental health and other areas of interest. Younger children may begin through the Cloverbud program.

Henschen is currently studying biology and considering a future career in genetic counseling or biotechnology. She credits her early 4-H science projects with helping develop that interest.

WCSM Radio is celebrating National 4-H Week with special guests throughout the week on Spectrum, airing weekdays from 12:35 to 12:55 p.m.
