Kroger has received a $3 million federal grant to offer cooking demonstrations at its stores this winter as part of the Trump administration’s Make America Healthy Again “Eat Real Food” initiative.
According to the Ohio News Network, the funding comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The program is intended to teach healthy eating and cooking skills, emphasizing whole foods and reaching people in rural and suburban communities affected by chronic obesity.
ONN reports the award has prompted questions about why the grocery company needs federal funding and about the scientific basis for the initiative’s food priorities.
The report did not identify the individuals or organizations raising those concerns.
