Ohio to Receive $8 Million in General Motors Driving Data Settlement

Ohio is set to receive $8 million through a settlement involving General Motors and 36 states over allegations the automaker collected and sold driving data without customers’ consent.

According to ONN affiliate WBNS-TV, GM enrolled drivers in its Smart Driver program between 2016 and 2024. The program tracked driving habits and was promoted as a tool to improve driving safety.

Customers were told their information would not be shared without consent, but the data was later sold to insurance brokers, according to the report.

The settlement requires GM to obtain express consent from consumers before collecting or sharing their driving data.
