Trial Begins for Guardians Pitchers Accused in Betting Scheme
Jury selection began Monday in federal court in New York for suspended Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz.
According to ONN affiliate WTOL-TV, prosecutors allege the pitchers accepted payments to help gamblers win at least $460,000 through bets on the speed and outcomes of their pitches.
Both pitchers have pleaded not guilty. Their attorneys say the pitching decisions were intended to deceive batters.
Clase and Ortiz remain on unpaid leave. The trial is expected to last approximately one month.
